The first Matt Helm book. I read a number of these about 25 years ago and really enjoyed them, so I decided to return to the first of the series and see if it's held up.
It has. The setting and attitudes threaten to become historical set-pieces now, but the descent of Helm from a writer/photographer/citizen back into his past as an assassin is as sad as ever. And a reminder that a good writer can do a lot in 142 pages.
